SEATTLE — A week after announcing her plan to run for Washington governor, Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz’s campaign is officially underway.
Franz released a video via Twitter last week announcing her plans to run for the governorship, writing, “My office has been on the front lines of our changing world. I know what it means to take bold risks to make big progress because there isn’t time to wait. We’re facing many challenges, but we can tackle them together.”
The video announcement for her candidacy touted her success in getting a $500 million investment from the state Legislature to prevent and fight wildfires and in generating hundreds of millions of dollars to build schools and fund libraries and hospitals across the state.
“We need bold, creative policies to tackle the biggest challenges facing this state, and that’s what voters are calling for,” Franz said to the crowd at her kickoff event Monday. “I’ve seen the very best of Washington in my time as Commissioner of Public Lands. I’ve seen how we rise to the occasion in the face of crises to take care of our communities. We’ve got to plan, we’ve got to act now, and we can’t be afraid to be bold.”

Franz has served as the State Commissioner of Public Lands since 2016 while also being only the second woman to be elected to the office. If elected, Franz would be the third woman to serve as the governor of Washington state.
During her tenure, Franz has overseen groundbreaking initiatives, such as historic investments to fight wildfires, protect Washington’s land and waters, and also ensure climate resiliency for the future.
Franz joins the likes of Yakima emergency room physician Dr. Raul Garcia, Semi Bird, and Laurel Khan, who’ve all announced their candidacies, according to Ballotpedia. Democrat Bob Ferguson, the state’s Attorney General, launched his campaign on May 2, and Ambra Mason announced also her campaign as part of the Constitution Party, according to Ballotpedia.
At the beginning of the month, Gov. Jay Inslee announced he will not be seeking re-election in 2024, clearing the way for younger members of all parties to run. Inslee, who is the longest-serving governor in office in the U.S., was first elected in 2012 and became only the second Washington governor elected to three consecutive terms.
