Richard Marles ‘a Failed Defence Minister’ for Committing to ‘Symbolism of AUKUS’

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Australians have to draw the conclusion “Richard Marles is a failed Defence Minister” with Australia’s current defensive structure.

While AUKUS is Australia’s biggest defense investment, the nuclear submarines will not be operational until the late 2030s with no immediate missile programs acquired despite Indo-Pacific tensions.

“The government has decided, because it has committed to the symbolism of AUKUS, it is not going to do anything about acquiring a military ability for Australia over the next ten years,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia.

“And this sort of nonsense of moving a few blokes from Adelaide to Brisbane and then trying to sell the media that this is a dramatic restructuring and it’s all about deterring China.

“This is the worst of Australian Defence Syndrome – where we do nothing but we talk a big game.”
