Representative Kim Schrier, Democrat of Washington, won election to a third term on Thursday, according to The Associated Press, beating back a steep challenge from Matt Larkin, a Republican and former Bush administration official.
Dr. Schrier, a pediatrician, focused much of her campaign on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that had guaranteed a right to an abortion, calling herself “the only pro-choice woman doctor” in Congress. She also focused on Democratic legislation that helped cap the price of insulin for some patients and expand access to health care.
When she won the western Washington seat in 2018, as part of a wave of Democrats who swept into office in a backlash against former President Donald J. Trump, she became the first Democrat to represent the district. Her re-election victory deprived Republicans of a crucial seat they had poured millions of dollars into flipping back into their column.
Running under the slogan “Make crime illegal again,” Mr. Larkin targeted Dr. Schrier over crime in Seattle and its surrounding areas as well as skyrocketing costs across the district. He previously mounted an unsuccessful run to be the state’s attorney general after serving as a speechwriter in President George W. Bush’s administration.
